Anti SmokingA handful of agencies are set to carve up the government’s £12 million advertising budget for the upcoming anti-smoking laws, mad.co.uk understands.

It’s believed that The Farm, Golley Slater, Profero and Fishburn Hedges will win an array of anti-smoking work before the ban in England and Wales comes into force.

mad.co.uk understands that £2 million will be spent in Wales before the ban is imposed on 2 April. A further £10 million will be spent in England when the ban is extended in July.

The government is looking for agencies to cover advertising, digital and PR in the run-up to the ban, which will outlaw smoking in public spaces.

Advertising agency Golley Slater has already created a television advert on the dangers of second hand smoking.

Directed by Barry Ackroyd, who recently worked on United 93, the film about the doomed 9/11 flight, the adverts will be streamed on a new government anti-smoking website.

Chris Lovell, CEO of Golley Slater, told mad.co.uk that the adverts are set in a café and pub and use stark messaging with a deliberately scary voiceover.

The voiceover states: “It is there, where you are drinking, eating, relaxing. But you won’t notice it, floating, clinging, killing. Second hand smoke kills.”

Lovell said: “"The cast for the two 30-second TV commercials is drawn from real-life with people who were 'recruited' off the streets and from pubs and cafes.

"The TV commercials feature second hand smoke personified as a malignant, unseen predator which stalks customers at a pub and café location.”
