Asda unveils UK-made clothing brand
UK retailer Asda is launching a new brand under its George fashion range that is designed and made in the UK to support national trade.
The new aptly named label “Made in the UK” will be tagged with a visible label featuring the Union Jack. An in store campaign will be launched to market the new brand.
Asda is also inviting UK clothing manufacturers to present their latest designs to a panel of Asda buyers.
Asda has also committed to placing new country of origin labels on its entire George clothing range within the next 12 months.
Asda clothing boss Angela Spindler said the move to offer UK made items follows on from growing customer demand for locally produced foods and also enables the retailer to reduce the time from when an item is seen on the catwalk to when it is on the shop floor.
Spindler added: “It obviously makes sense for us to use local manufacturers here in the UK whenever we can, rather than shipping in products from the other side of the world."
Asda’s move to promote locally produced clothing contrasts the move by luxury fashion label Burberry to reduce its costs by moving production overseas.
Earlier this week Asda rolled out its Must Haves fashion brand to include a children’s range, which is being backed by a heavy-weight TV advertising campaign.
