ftThe Financial Times was awarded the prestigious Newspaper of the Year award at the 2008 British Press Awards last night.

The accolade comes as a ‘refreshed’ FT continued to outperform the market and post year-on-year increases in circulation.

In the latest ABCs, the paper, which at £1.50 is now 70 pence more expensive than The Guardian, The Independent and the Daily Telegraph, and more than double the price of the 70 pence Times, was the only title to have grown its circulation-average in the last six months, up 1.9 per cent year-on-year to 445,825 copies.

The judges said that Pearson’s FT had been uncompromising in its mission to give readers a service that is poised, informed, classy and intelligent, adding: “it is incomparably the best newspaper in the country”.

Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times, said: “I am delighted that the Financial Times has been voted as Newspaper of the Year. It’s a tremendous tribute to our team of journalists around the world.”

Last year, the FT launched a new multimedia brand campaign created by DDB London, playing off the strapline ‘We Live in Financial Times’.

The newspaper also opened up its online content with a series of digital initiatives, including a deal with Google that enables users up to 30 free stories each month and another which allows totally free access to students.

The British Press Awards is the annual celebration of the best in journalism across the national press.

The next ABC monthly newspaper audit will be reported by mad.co.uk on Friday.
