BBC wins F1 rights

Lewis HamiltonThe BBC has won the television rights to show Formula One (F1) from the start of the 2009 season. 

The five-year deal includes races being broadcast on the BBC Sport website, as well as on TV and radio.

ITV, which recently signed up Sony to sponsor its 2008 F1 coverage, has been broadcasting the races for 12 years.

The Michael Grade-fronted broadcaster struck a deal with Formula One Management (FOM) last week to acquire online rights for F1 on itv.com ahead of the new season.

The 2008 F1 season kicked off in Australia last weekend in a race won by Lewis Hamilton (pictured), who is to continue his relationship with Vodafone by featuring in a new sponsorship film.
