Job Ads - What to Look For

Always study job ads carefully, this will help you decide whether the position and company are best suited to you. The ad will also help you when constructing the cover letter and give you ideas for questions when being interviewed. Advertisements will usually contain the following information:

  • Job title
  • Company details
  • Key characteristics of department, business area etc
  • Location
  • Job specifications - duties and responsibilities
  • Personal specifications - education/qualifications, experience, personal
  • qualities required
  • Salary package

Don't be tempted to look at the job title or heading alone and dash off a letter/reply. Respond as requested, no matter how unusual or inconvenient (e.g., handwriting your CV, including a photograph, telephoning for an initial chat etc). If you are asked to telephone an agency, prepare yourself to be screened on the telephone - have your CV and any other relevant information to hand.
