Schmidt-Vogel takes control of GroupM TradingAlexander Schmidt-Vogel, the founding manager and current chief executive of GroupM’s MediaCom Worldwide, has been appointed to the new position of global CEO of GroupM Trading.

Schmidt-Vogel (pictured) will start his new role “in the coming weeks” and will be responsible for all GroupM’s trading activities, encompassing WPP media agencies Maxus, MediaCom, Mediaedge:cia and MindShare.

GroupM aims to bring the benefits of scale to media trading and communication services for all WPP agency clients.

Based in Berlin, Germany, Schmidt-Vogel will report to the group’s global CEO Irwin Gotlieb and chief operating officer Rupert Day.

“Alexander pioneered tactical and implementation planning practices and was the first to exploit the capability to improve client pricing in the marketplace,” said Gotlieb.  “We are delighted that he has agreed to lead GroupM’s trading operations around the world.”       

Since its formation 22 years ago, MediaCom has become a leading global media service agency with billings of almost £9 billion and a network of offices in 86 countries.

In 2002, Schmidt-Vogel was named MediaCom’s Worldwide CEO with offices in New York and Europe after serving as chairman and CEO of MediaCom Europe since 1996. Prior to that he served as CEO of MediaCom Germany since 1988. 

Schmidt-Vogel said:  “Value creation for our clients through sophisticated and new trading models will be the backbone of all future offline and online communication. I’m excited at the prospect of further strengthening the best and largest trading organisation in the world.”

UK chief executive of GroupM Steve Allan is set to replace Schmidt-Vogel as the new chairman and chief executive of  MediaCom Worldwide.
