Facebook continues to grow but still behind Bebo

myspace bebo facebookUK internet visits to social networking site Facebook rose by almost four per cent in June giving the site 16.62 per cent overall market share.

Over the last six months, Facebook's audience has grown by 502 per cent, compared to 33 per cent for Bebo and 30 per cent for MySpace.

The latest Hitwise figures show Facebook ranked third behind MySpace, which has 30.99 per cent of market share, and Bebo, which has come out in front with 35.34 per cent.

Facebook has emerged as the front runner for social networking as its market continues to grow while MySpace’s share was slightly down from previous figures by three per cent despite reaching over 10 million UK users earlier this month. 

Bebo has managed to overtake from rival MySpace, owned by News Corporation, but only saw its market share up two per cent on previous figures.

While Bebo remains the most popular with children and teenagers with almost a third (32 per cent) of its audience is under 18, compared to 14 per cent for MySpace and just five per cent for Facebook.

Facebook is mainly targeted at university students and older with 70 per cent of its audience aged between 18 and 34.

Friends Reunited, now owned by ITV and a pioneer in online social networking, is ranked fifth with a steady market share of 2.78 per cent, just behind Faceparty, which is ranked fourth with a share of 3.39 per cent.

Meanwhile, Oxford University staff are logging on to Facebook and using evidence they find on student profiles to discipline students.

Photos on the social networking website of undergraduates celebrating the end of their exams have been emailed to students by Oxford's disciplinary body, as evidence of breaches of the University's code of conduct.
