The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is urging consumers to exercise their rights under the Data Protection Act to protect their personal details, following a series of data blunders.
The ICO is launching a personal Information Healthcheck to help consumers protect their personal details in a bid to minimise the amount of personal information held about them by organisations.
Research by the ICO showed people are more aware than ever of the value of their personal information, with 95 per cent considering it ‘quite’ or ‘very’ valuable, and more than 70 per cent claiming to routinely shred personal documents.
However, the ICO claims 44 per cent of individuals have never considered exercising their rights under the Data Protection Act that include contacting an organisation to find out what information it holds about them.
ICO deputy commissioner David Smith says: “In the current climate we are urging people to take the protection of their personal information even more seriously. Our healthcheck is suitable for everyone, whether they’ve never before thought about protecting their personal information or could just benefit from a few extra tips and ideas.”
Last month data processing business Graphic Data faced an investigation by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) following the loss of over a million Royal Bank of Scotland’s customers’ personal details (precisionmarketing.co.uk).
